چکیده
In order to improve the reverberation-mapping based estimate of the mass of the central supermassive black hole in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, we have reanalyzed archival ultraviolet monitoring spectra from two campaigns undertaken with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. We measure emission-line time delays for four lines, C IVλ1549, He IIλ1640, C III]λ1909, and Mg IIλ2798, from both campaigns. We combine these measurements with the dispersion of the variable part of each respective emission line to obtain the mass of the central object. Despite the problematic nature of some of the data, we are able to measure a mass of (4.14± 0.73)× 10 M⊙, although this, like all reverberation-based masses, is probably systematically uncertain by a factor of 3–4. We show that the sharp cutoff in the hard X-ray spectrum of NGC 4151, unusual for Seyfert 1 galaxies, can be reconciled with the average Seyfert 1 spectrum if we assume that the central source is completely hidden from our line of sight by the thick part of the accretion disk or by the broad emission line clouds. The observed X-ray radiation is produced by scattering of the Seyfert 1-type spect...

New HST observations show that the bright X-ray source in the face-on spiral galaxy NGC 1073 is located near a ring of recent star formation with an age of 8–16 Myr. This strengthens the association of X-ray sources in spiral galaxies emitting near or above the Eddington limit for a 20M⊙ black hole with recent star formation events. Two candidate optical counterparts of the X-ray source are fou...

The observations and interpretation of broad iron lines in the X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies are reviewed. The line profiles observed from MCG–6-30-15 and NGC 3516 show extended red wings to the line explained by large gravitational red-shifts. The results are consistent with the emission expected from an X-ray irradiated flat accretion disc orbiting very close to a black hole. Results fr...

We consider the origin of the so–called S stars orbiting the supermassive black hole at the very center of the Galaxy. These are usually assumed to be massive main–sequence stars. We argue instead that they are the remnants of low–to– intermediate mass red giants which have been scattered on to near–radial orbits and tidally stripped as they approach the central black hole. Such stars retain on...
